The 2018 Ochiltree County Senior Spelling Bee is one for the record books. 28 spellers began the event Valentine’s afternoon at Perryton Junior High. After the end of the seventh round, the field was narrowed to four. Last year’s top three; Nicholas Battin, Catey Thomas and Saleen Nyman along with Evan Hernandez.
Those four spelled word after word for an amazing19 perfect rounds. Then, in the 27th round, Hernandez was tripped, up setting up the three student rematch. Four rounds later, reigning champ Battin went out in third place.
The two young ladies hung in for six more rounds, including a couple of rounds where both missed their words. Thomas missed again in the 41st round and this time Nyman spelled her word and then one more, “Electioneer” to take the top honors.
The top three spellers won cash prizes of $210, $140 & $70 along with other prizes donated by local businesses.
Miss Nyman will now represent Ochiltree County at the Regional Spelling Bee in Amarillo in March. The winner there will advance to the National Bee in Washington DC.
