Fifty-seven fourth and fifth grade students at Williams Intermediate competed in the 2018 Junior Spelling on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. After four rounds the field was narrowed to seven competitors as the words got tougher and tougher.
In the fifth round, fourth grader Marlene Ontiveros was the only contestant to spell her word correctly. Ontiveros then spelled “Propaganda” correctly to take first place and will now advance to the Ochiltree County Spelling Bee, February 14 at Perryton Junior High.
After Ontiveros secured first place, the remaining students from the previous round battled it out for the remaining prize packages for second and third place. Samuel DeSantiago, also a fourth grader, took second place spelling “Facilitate” and fourth grader Saul Garcia spelled “Expeditionaries” to earn third place.
The top students earned cash prizes donated by the four local banks; Interstate Bank, Perryton National Bank, FirstBank Southwest and First National Bank. The cash awards were $125 for first place, $100 for second and $75 for third. The top three also took home a prize bag of donations from area businesses including; 3 Sisters Frozen Yogurt, Dixie Dog, Chihua’s, Daylight Donuts, Game On Graphics, La Casita, Lowe’s Supermarket, Margarita’s, McDonalds, Pak-A-Sak, Perryton Office Supply, Pizza Hut, Sonic Drive-In, Subway, United Supermarket and Watonga Cheese.
